Artemus Lathrop
Family

Artemus Lathrop (Isaac10, Simon9, Meletiah8, Hope7, Joseph6, Rev John5, Thomas4, Robert3, John2, Robert1) was born May 22, 1804 in Ontario,Co. NY, and died Dec 3, 1888 in Baxter Springs,KA. He married (2) Harriett Osborne. He married (1) Polly Sharp Oct 1, 1826 in Darwin,IL.She was born in IL. He married (2) Elizabeth Woodall August 4, 1843. He married (3) Martha Lawson May 7, 1846 in Clark Co. IL. She was born 1820 in Indiana, and died Unknown. He married (4) Sarah Blackburn .November 03, 1870 in Clark County, IL.He married (5) HARRIETT OSBORN July 16, 1882 in Clark County, IL. Artemus's parents were Isaac Lathrop and Lois Sawyer. Artemus is also listed in a book titled "Early Landowners of Grayson Co. Texas" which is located in the Sherman, Texas Library. The book is kept separate from the shelved research. You must ask for it. He is listed as A. Lathrop born in New York State. Shortly before the Civil War there was a influx of northerners that came to the Sherman area with promise of free land. Many settled in a community called "Yankee Town". The area does not exist any longer and I found little information about it. Artemus's house is listed near the Wells family house in Sherman in the census in the above referenced book. Artemus's daughter Sara Jane meet and married Daniel Anderson Wells at this location in Texas. Sara is documented using three different names. Sarah, Sarah Jane, and a nickname "Lina" which made research for her very difficult. Before the Civil War started many of those who supported the Union cause returned back to the north. Artemus his wife and younger children were of those that returned. His daughter Sara Jane Lathrop Wells remained in Texas.
