Charley
/ Charlie Artemus Wells
was born 1864 in Grayson County Texas. Charley made his home in and
died in, Palo Pinto County, Texas. He married
Emma Ozella Harvey in
1891 who was born in
1866 in AR. Charlie was the son of Daniel
Anderson Wells and Sara Jane "Lina" Lathrop
In a book
called the History of Palo Pinto, there was an entry for Wells.
It said that Charles Artemus Wells came with his family by way of
East Texas from Tennessee and Alabama[1].
It said that his Father died in Midlothian (?) (which is Ellis[2]
County) of "Black Jaundice" and was buried in a cemetery
there, but the location was unknown. It said Charles was not the
oldest but he took charge after the death of his father. He and
his Mother and the rest of his family decided to stop and make their
home in Palo Pinto. This was in 1875[3],
his Mother's name was Sarah Jane Lithrop[4]
Wells.

Documentation
VS. Book
[1].
In the documents of (mother) Sarah Jane Lathrop Wells she states
the family is from Indiana and Illinois not Tennessee or Alabama.
In the 1910 census Charlie Artemus Wells claims Texas as his birth
place not Tennessee. Charlie's parents were married in Grayson
County Texas according to Sara Jane Lathrop Wells in her Confederate
States Army Soldiers Widow's application . Tennesseeand Alabama
must be the result of family lore.
[2]
Sarah Jane Lathrop Wells states in her Confederate States Army Soldiers
Widow's application that her husband, Charlie's father, died in
Van Zandt County Texas in 1880. Their youngest child in 1880
was Monroe Jackson Wells, age two, in the Kaufman County Texas 1880
census. Kaufman County is connected to both Van Zandt and Ellis
Counties. Any one of these three counties are possible.
We must remember that counties were not clearly marked in 1880 as
they are today.
[3]
This date has to be 1880 or later since the father died in 1880.
[4]
Sarah Jane "Mrs. J. S. Wells" death certificate states
her maiden name was Lathrope.
Correct spelling is Lathrop. Sara Jane Lathrop Wells father
was Artemus Lathrop
. He was from Clark County Illinois. She stated in her .Confederate
States Army Soldiers Widow's application that Clark County Illinois
was her place of birth.
The above
errors are common in genealogy research. Stories get embellished,
times and places get mixed up as they are passed from generation
to generation. Family lore can not be discounted, but is often wrong
with a thread of truth in it somewhere. The errors in this
family's lore is minuet compared to my Anderson lineage. I
wasted two years looking a half a state away from the true location. The
problem with family lore errors is they will often take a researcher
down the wrong trail.

is from a family tree sent to Peggy Wilson. The information
appears to be probable. I have no documentation.
