He married (1) Harriet Sophia Murph April 19, 1864 in Autauga, Alabama and then Harriet's sister (2) Amanda Lewis Murph December 19, 1871 in Autauga County, Alabama, daughter of John Murph and Julia Goodwin. She was born October 26, 1848 in Autauga County, Alabama, and died May 21, 1942 in Van Zandt County, TX.

John served in the Confedrate Army in Alabama, in Company A, 56th Alabama Calvalry and was discharged in April 1865. He was a private.
