I traced our Smith Family Back to William Bryant Smith
by census records.
Much of our lineage into Texas was
with the help of our Smith Cousins or Van Zandt Co. Texas.

But
Much of the research for our not known by us Smith Cousins
pre-Texas, in this file, is someone else's research.
including
William Bryant Smiths parents are said to be:
Nathan Smith and Elizabeth Lybass
Nathan Smith's parents are is said to be:
James Smith and Miss Kinsey

Alabama Map
Area 1:

Autauga County Area where John Hunter Smith married in 1864 and lived until he left for Van Zandt County, Texas after 1870.

Area 2:
Joseph T. Smith is reported from 1857 to 1880; Barbour, Russell, and Bullock Counties, Alabama. (Three joined Counties) He marriedSophonia "Sou" Evans in Barbour County in 1857 and was counted on the Russell County census in 1860 and 1870. Joseph was reported as a farmer on the 1880 Census, Union Springs district Bullock County. It is possible they did not move but that county bountries changed. Some if not all of Joseph's children ended up in Van Zandt County, Texas between 1880 and 1885. It is not known at this time if Joseph and Sophonia went to Van Zandt County as well, but family lore says they did.

Brothers

Both brothers were born in Georgia so the Smith family probably migrated to Alabama from Georgia sometime after 1834, when John Hunter Smith was born, and before 1857, when Joseph married Sophonia W. Evans in Barbour County, Alabama. There are several Smith and Evans families that migrated from Georgia to Barbour County, Alabama so Barbour, Henry, Russell and Bullock counties are are good possible counties for research to find Joseph and John Hunters parents.

I have since found other Smith families that had relatives that migrated from Barbour County Alabama and surrounding counties to Smith and Van Zandt Counties Texas. No connection has been found to link our Smith family to these other Smith families.

Joseph T. Smith born January 1827, Georgia. (Joseph is Area 2 on map) The last time Joseph and his family were documented in Bullock County, Alabama is the 1880 census. While one of his sons was married in Van Zandt County Texas in 1886, no other references were found of Joseh T. Smith and his wife Sophonia W. Evans until the 1900 census of Dallas County, Texas. On this census Joseph and his wife were living with their youngest son James Abner Smith and his wife Mary Docia Parker and their two children Joseph and Carey Smith. Next door was Joseph T and Sophonia's son John (F) Smith and his young wife. In 1910 James Abner Smith was living in Van Zandt County without his wife or parents but with several more children he and Mary had. Mary's mother Martha Parker was liviving with James and the children.

and

John Hunter Smith born January 22, 1834, Georgia . (John is Area 1 on map) John's famiy is well documented coming from Autauga, Alabama to Van Zandt after 1870 and before 1880. He raised his family in Van Zandt in first the Myrtle Springs then the Elmwood area. (See new information in PDF file above)
