The book was given to my father Douglas Charles Hulsey, whose mother was Bertha Dee Whittington Hulsey. "Patty Yeager, a descendant of Kenion Whittington and his wife Sarah Mariah Millican, sent a copy of the following letter to Daarlene Lesse who shared with us. It was written on 1903 following the death of Sarah Mariah Millican, mother of the writer, Marvin Newton Whittington. Elder J.G. Webb, Dear Brother: I will write a few words in memory of my dead mother who was called home July 27, 1903. Her maiden name was Millican. She was born in North Carolina about the year 1818. Moved to South Carolina with her parents; there met Kenion Whittington, they both moved to Alabama with their parents. When she was twenty years old they were married. Both joined the same church, Baptist. In 1858 they moved to Little River County, Arkansas and bought a tract of land, upon which the town of Winthrop now stands. Father and my oldest brother both died during the Civil War. And in 1869 mother moved to Scott County Arkansas, and joined the church at Fellowship, four miles north-west of Waldron, Scott Co. Ark. She leaves seven children, a host of relatives and friends to mourn. Mother was confined to her bed most of the time for several years before she died. She was all that the word Mother implies. She was so good and kind to her children and to all. I can only say, as did Job, "The Lord giveth and the Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord". Mother died in the home of her daughter, Mrs. T.B. Bates at Waldron. She was laid to rest by the side of her daughter who preceeded her to the grave, in the Dunken grave yard, to sweetly sleep till Jesus calls for her. Written by her son in sorrow and in hope. M.N.
